About Upper Mustang
Upper Mustang is a remote, former “Forbidden Kingdom” in Nepal known for its starkly beautiful, desert-like landscapes and rich Tibetan Buddhist culture. Located in the Himalayas bordering Tibet, it features a unique terrain of mountains, deep gorges, and ancient cliff caves, alongside centuries-old monasteries and traditional villages. This restricted region was only opened to tourists in 1992, preserving its distinct heritage and making it a unique destination for trekkers and cultural explorers.
Geography and landscape
Location: A remote region in northern Nepal, situated north of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges.
Terrain: A surreal, arid landscape with a mix of barren plains, red cliffs, deep gorges, and mountain peaks, sometimes compared to the moon or Mars.
Ancient routes: The region is situated on an ancient trade route between Nepal and Tibet, with trails often following gravel roads and rocky gorges.

Tibetan influence: Upper Mustang is considered one of the last places to experience genuine, undisturbed Tibetan culture, blending Tibetan Buddhist traditions with Shamanistic Bon rites.

Detailed Itinerary
Drive Distance- 120 km/74 mile | Drive Hours- 6/7 hours | Altitude: 2480m/8136ft
After breakfast, we begin our drive from Pokhara to Lete. Today’s drive is scenic and adventurous, following the Kali Gandaki River valley. Our first stop is at Kusma, home to the world’s second highest bungee jump point. We will take some time to enjoy the view, have some snacks at the Cliff resort. After having great time at Kusma, we resume our drive towards Tatopani, stop at hot springs of Tatopani, where we can dip our feet or simply relax for a while at natural hot spring. Then after driving a while we make a stop at the Stunning Rupse waterfall, a massive natural cascade right along the roadside. Arrive at Lete in the late afternoon. Check in to guesthouse, rest and enjoy a warm dinner. Overnight stay at Guesthouse in Lete.

Muktinath 3800m/12467ft
After breakfast, we begin our drive from Lete to Kagbeni, passing through picturesque landscapes, beautiful villages, and apple orchards. En route we will stop to visit the serene Dhumba lake, a sacred and peaceful alpine lake near Jomsom, surrounded by stunning Himalayan views. After short visit at Dhumba lake, continue our journey to Muktinath temple (3800m), one of the most sacred and revered pilgrimage sites for both Hindus and Buddhist religion. Explore the temple premises, the 108 natural water spouts, and the eternal flame. After short visit of Muktinath temple we will take lunch break at Mukinath village. After lunch we will descend to the ancient village of Kagbeni, the gateway to Upper Mustang. Explore its narrow alleys, ancient red walled monastery and traditional Tibetan style houses. Enjoy dinner at the guesthouse with views of the Kali Gandaki valley. Overnight stay at Guesthouse in Kagbeni.
Drive Distance: 85 km | Drive Hours: 6-7 hours | Altitude: 3840 meters
After breakfast, complete the special permit process in Kagbeni, the official entry point to the restricted Upper Mustang region. We will begin our drive, following rugged trails through dramatic landscapes of deep canyons, windswept cliffs and unique rock formations. After driving an hour, we stop at Chhusang checkpoint for special permit verification. After completing special permit formalities resume our ride, with several scenic stops at viewpoint offering stunning views of mountain peaks including Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri and the Tibetan plateau. we will enjoy our lunch break in Samar village. On the way, we will visit the ancient Ghar Gompa, one of the oldest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Mustang region associated with the Padmasambhava. We will proceed through Tsarang village, where we will explore the Tsarang monastery and Royal palace. We arrive walled city of Lomanthang by late afternoon. Check in at guesthouse and enjoy a warm dinner. Overnight stay at Guesthouse in lomanthang.
After breakfast in the walled kingdom of Lo-Manthang, the day begins with a cultural and spiritual immersion. We set off on foot to visit the three major monasteries of Lo-Manthang.
Jampa Lhakhang Monastery– This monastery also known as the “God House”, the oldest monastery among the trip and showcases a massive 3 story statue of Buddha and intricately painted mandalas.
Thubchen Gompa – a 15th century monastery with towering columns and a dramatic red facade, echoing the power and artistry of ancient Mustang. Chode Gompa- it’s a living monastery where you may witness monks chanting and performing daily rituals.
After exploring 3 monasteries in Lo-Manthang, we drive to mysterious highlands, reaching the Golf course – one of the highest altitude golf courses in the world, perched at 4,700 meters. While golfing is symbolic here, but the main attraction is the awe-inspiring panoramic view of snowcapped peaks including Mount Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Damodar Himal and glimpses of the Tibetan plateau to the north. After spending great time, we continue toward Chhoser valley, a rugged and enchanting landscapes with wind carved cliffs and hidden caves. Here we will visit:
Nifu monastery – a secluded and lesser known monastery nestled within a cliffside, where ancient murals and meditative silence create a timeless atmosphere.
Jhong Cave – a five story cave complex with over 44 rooms, believed to be centuries old. Used shelter, mediation site and fortess. it offers a fascinating look into Mustang’s troglodyte history.
As the sun begins to dip behind the barren ridges, we explore the beautiful Chhoser village, where traditional Mustang homes stand with yak corrals and barley fields. This village is a living testament to Mustang’s resilience and cultural heritage. Return to Lomanthang for overnight stay.
Drive Distance: 135 km | Drive Hours: 7-8 hours | Altitude: 2670 meters
After hearty breakfast begin our drive descent retracing the route via Chogo La Pass (4280m). We will have lunch break with stunning view of Mount Annapurna and Nilgiri ranges. Afternoon we will re-enter the Lower Mustang region as the landscapes starts to transform from barren highland to apple growing valleys. Late afternoon we will arrive at Marpha village. Check in guesthouse take short rest and we will explore stunning Marpha village. We will taste fresh apple cider, dried apple snacks or Marpha’s famed apple brandy in the evening. Overnight at Guesthouse in Marpha village.
Drive Distance: 165 km/102mile | Drive Hours: 7-8 hours | Altitude: 822 meters.
Enjoy a local breakfast, Begin our drive, tracing the Kali Gandaki River through the world’s deepest gorge between Mount Dhaulagiri and Mount Annapurna. We will drive through many beautiful villages such as Tukuche, Kalopani, Ghasa etc. Continue our drive and we will enter subtropical zone – lush vegetation and waterfalls begin to return. We will take short break at Rupse waterfall cascading beside the road. Continue our drive toward Tatopani, famous for its natural hot springs. Soak your tired muscles in the hot springs. We will take lunch break at Kusma bazar – Nepal’s highest and world’s second highest bungee jump. Overnight at hotel in Pokhara.
