Trip Overview

Paro Tsechu is one of the most popular festivals in Bhutan. Featuring dances performed by trained monks and laymen in amazing masks and costumes, Tsechus (festivals) are one of the best ways to experience the ancient living culture of Bhutan. A Tsechu is a Buddhist festival in honour of Guru Rimpoche, the saint who brought Buddhism to Bhutan. A highlight of the Paro Tsechu is the unfurling of the silk Thangka – so large it covers the face of an entire building and is considered one of the most sacred blessings in the whole of Bhutan. The ‘Thangka, known in Bhutan as a ‘thongdroel’ is a religious picture scroll, and is only exhibited for a few hours at daybreak on the final day of the festival enabling the people to obtain its blessing. This holy scroll “confers liberation by the mere sight of it” (the meaning of the word ‘thongdroel’ in Bhutanese). This tour also visits sacred sites in Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, Trongsa and Bumthang.

Detailed Itinerary

Create your first impression of Bhutan from Paro International Airport. After a short rest, take a sightseeing tour to Paro Dzong, a fine example of Bhutanese historic architecture, and National Museum of Bhutan, where collects intriguing local artifacts with insightful instruction.

In 2024, the local people in Paro celebrate the Paro Tshechu Festival from March 20 to 24 . Both monks and common people will gather in dzongs to celebrate it, dressing their best clothes. The monks will dress like ghosts and dance for audience during the celebration. Although they look like ghosts, they are actually driving ghosts away in this way.

You will transfer to Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan, for sightseeing today. You will visit the National Memorial Chorten, National Library, Folk Heritage Museum and Tashichho Dzong in Thimphu. You will get the outline of Bhutan’s culture and history after today’s sightseeing.

Today, you will go back to Paro to continue the celebration for the Tshechu Festival, but let’s go to the Punakha to explore more about Bhutan first. You will stop at the Dochu La Pass for a grand view of the Himalaya Range on your way to Punakha.

Punakha is the former capital of Bhutan. You will learn about its history, arts and religions in Chimi Lhakhang and Punakha Dzong. Transfer to Paro after today’s Punakha tour.

Welcome to another session of Tshechu Festival Celebration in Paro. You will visit the Paro Dzong again. You may see a huge Thangka of Guru Rinpoche hanging on the wall of the Dzong. Devout Buddhists walk around the Thangka to pray for good life and peace. You can also try local snacks.

The Taktsang Monastery is a must-visit attraction for most tourists. It is more prosperous during the Tshechu Festival. Around 2.5 hours’ hiking are needed to reach Taktsang Monastery, the most famous religious relic in Bhutan. It is possible to take a rest at the view terrace, which is located on the half point of the hiking route.
