Most Common FAQs

Yes, you are welcome to bring you own bike for the cycle trip. Using your own bike can provide a familiar and comfortable riding experience. We recommend using a 'hardtail' mountain bike with front suspension, which is ideal for the type of terrain we'll be covering. A bike with a broad gear range will make it easier for you to navigate both uphill and downhill segments of our route. Regarding tyres, we suggest high-quality options with good grip, such as the Schwalbe Smart Sam. A width of 35-40 mm is ideal for managing the dirt roads and non-technical trails we'll be navigating.

Spare inner tube, compact air pump, multifunctional toolset, hand sanitizer, energy snacks, extra clothing layer, rainwear, biking gloves, sunblock, essential maintenance tools, and sunglasses. When renting a bike, consider using a hydration pack that doubles as a backpack to carry your belongings, as hire bikes don't come equipped with handlebar bags. If you're bringing your own bike, you'll have greater flexibility in storage options, including handlebar bags, seat bags, panniers, or a multi-functional hydration backpack.

Expect a mix of dirt roads and non-technical trails on a typical day of riding.

Yes, bringing your own helmet is compulsory for safety reasons. Even though some bike rentals might offer helmets, using your own ensures that you have a helmet that fits well and that you are comfortable wearing, thereby enhancing your safety and overall riding experience.

Yes, we provide ongoing on-trail support with a backup car or Jeep that is equipped with a bike repair kit, water supplies, and a tea container for your convenience. If you'd like, you can also store some extra clothing in the vehicle if needed. This ensures you have the resources you need for repairs or other contingencies while on your ride.

If you're bringing your own bike, we recommend carrying a minimum set of spare parts to address common issues that may arise. This set should include tubes that fit your bike's specifications, a spare disc brake (if applicable), a couple of spare spokes for each wheel type, spare brake blocks or disc brake pads, chain links or a chain connector, and a rear derailleur hanger. Additionally, any non-standard parts specific to your bike should also be brought along. We suggest packing a couple of extra inner tubes as well. This ensures you're well-prepared for any maintenance or repair needs during your ride.

Yes, bike rental services are available for the cycle trip. This is a convenient option especially for participants who don't wish to bring their own bikes or are traveling from far away locations. You can conveniently rent bikes locally in Leh, we collaborate with a local vendor to offer you a variety of hardtail mountain bike options, all equipped with front suspension. Available brands include Lapierre Raid, Ghost Across, Cube Access Pro, and Imperl Hexa.

The rental bikes comes fitted with a single bottle cage. While the cage is provided, it's important to bring your own water bottles along with an additional hydration pack. As the rental bikes are not fitted with handlebar bags, seat bags, or racks for panniers, we suggest that you bring a hydration pack that can double as a backpack for carrying your essential items. For an optimised riding experience, we also recommend bringing your own saddle and cleats, to ensure both shoe compatibility and a comfortable seat during your journey.

The cost of bike rental fluctuates based on the type and brand of bike you select, ranging from USD $250 to $500 for the trip (prices are subject to change). For the most current pricing details, please reach out to us directly. Due to limited availability, we strongly recommend booking your bike rental in advance. Rental bikes come equipped with puncture repair kits; however, you will also need to either purchase or bring your own inner tubes for the duration of the trip. We can provide specifications for the appropriate tire size if you choose to bring your own tubes for your chosen hire bike.

When deciding between renting a bike and bringing your own, consider multiple factors including convenience, the length of your travel, how comfortable you are with your own bike, and its current condition. Renting may be a more practical choice for those traveling a long distance or for those who don't have an easy way to transport their own bike. If you opt to bring your own bike, you'll need to pack it in a specialised bike box marked with a 'fragile' sticker. Be aware that replacement boxes are scarce in Leh if yours is damaged. Additionally, transporting your bike by air from Delhi to Leh and back will incur extra charges. The airline allows a maximum of 15kg per passenger for checked baggage and 7kg for hand luggage; excess weight is charged at approximately 600 INR per kilo.
