Trip Overview

The Global Ascent: Everest, K2, & Kilimanjaro
Introduction
Good Karma Trekking proudly presents The Global Ascent, an unprecedented trekking package that unites the three most iconic and geographically diverse mountain adventures on Earth. This is not just a series of hikes; it is a trilogy of transformation, a journey across continents to stand beneath the planet’s greatest peaks: the legendary Everest Base Camp (EBC) in Nepal, the majestic K2 Base Camp in Pakistan, and the solitary giant, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

This package is designed for the seasoned adventurer who seeks to push their limits, experience diverse cultures, and achieve a world-class trekking feat. Prepare to step out of your everyday life and into the world’s highest and most inspiring landscapes.

The Unmatched Value of Doing It All at Once
While each of these treks is a significant achievement on its own, undertaking them as The Global Ascent offers unique benefits that elevate the entire experience:

Peak Conditioning and Momentum: You will maintain the high level of fitness and altitude acclimatization gained from the first trek, carrying that preparedness directly into the next two. Instead of starting from scratch, you build crucial physical and mental momentum, significantly increasing your chances of a successful and enjoyable journey on all three mountains.

The Ultimate Adventure Status: Completing these three giants together solidifies your standing as an elite global trekker. It’s a remarkable story and a clear display of dedication and endurance that few others can claim.

Streamlined Logistics: Good Karma Trekking manages the complex international travel, visa requirements, ground logistics, and permits for three different countries. You benefit from a single, cohesive booking process and our expertise, allowing you to focus entirely on the adventure ahead.

A Superior Investment: Packaging these long-haul, complex treks together often offers a better overall value and a cohesive support system throughout your multi-month journey compared to booking them individually.

The Three Worlds You Will Discover
These three mountains—often referred to as the “Big Three” of global trekking—offer vastly different experiences, making this package a journey of discovery across three unique worlds:

1. Everest Base Camp (Nepal): The Himalayan World
Begin your ascent in the Sherpa heartland, following in the footsteps of mountaineering legends. This is a spiritual and cultural journey amid towering, snow-clad giants. You will trek through villages adorned with vibrant prayer flags, visit ancient Buddhist monasteries, and experience the warmth of Himalayan culture, culminating in a spectacular view of the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest.

2. K2 Base Camp (Pakistan): The Glacier World
Next, transition to a challenging and raw expedition through the remote Karakoram Range. This trek is an uncompromising, rugged, and wild landscape of rock and ice. You will cross the massive Baltoro Glacier and trek into the dramatic “Throne Room” of mountains, standing beneath K2, the formidable “Savage Mountain.” This is an experience of unparalleled solitude and raw, glacial power.

3. Mount Kilimanjaro (Tanzania): The African World
Finally, travel to Africa for an ascent of the world’s highest free-standing mountain. This is a diverse biological and geological trek, a journey through nature’s vertical garden. You will climb through five distinct ecological zones—from lush rainforest to an alpine desert—to reach the snowy summit of Uhuru Peak high above the African plains.

An Appeal to Global Adventurers To the dedicated hikers, the relentless dreamers, and the global adventure lovers—this is your call to the mountains.

If you are someone who sees a mountain and yearns to climb it, who thrives on the challenge of high altitude and the reward of panoramic views, The Global Ascent was created for you.

Join Good Karma Trekking and step into a select company of individuals who have taken on the greatest mountains on three continents. This is more than a package; it’s a personal odyssey, a test of will, and an unparalleled celebration of human capability.

Secure your place on this ultimate adventure and make it the year you conquer the world’s iconic peaks.

In other months (December, January, February, June, July, and August), you will take a 40-minute flight to Lukla from Kathmandu.

Our journey to EBC, which begins from Lukla, will be very exciting, as it will be our 1st day of the trek. We will leave Lukla and trek through Chaurikharka village and descend to Dudhkoshi Ghat (2,530m / 8,300ft) until we reach Phakding. Your first destination is Swayambhunath, a religious stupa complex located on top of a hill. You can see the entire Kathmandu city from up there. After that, you head towards Boudhanath, the largest stupa in Nepal and a holy place for Buddhist followers. This place gives a sense of peace and calmness as you enter the structure.

From here, you drive to Pashupatinath Temple, a holy ground for Hindu followers. This temple is crowded every day by the devotees of Lord Shiva. Please know that clicking pictures inside the main temple area is prohibited.

Now, you head to Patan Durbar square, located in the heart of Lalitpur. Krishna Mandir is its major attraction, but the beautiful newa architecture is the one that catches the eye of the tourists.

You now visit the last destination of the Kathmandu valley tour, Basantapur Durbar Square. This square is a living paradise offering old durbars, monuments, temples, monasteries, and more.

After a tiring long day, you finally return to your hotel, where you are given a brief summary of your K2 Base Camp trek. If you have things to buy for the journey, then you can visit the local markets.

Today there is the opportunity to walk up the Godwin-Austen glacier to the Art Gilkey Memorial (an American geologist and mountaineer) just before K2 Base camp. This is a very long but a spectacular day. We will leave early morning, crossing the glaciers onto the faint trail heading towards K2 (there is a faint rocky trail all the way). As we follow the glacier towards K2 the mountain seems to grow bigger and bigger. Broad Peak rears up to our right and after about 3 hours we pass Broad Peak base camp (there is the option to turn back here). We usualy have our lunch break here and then those who are continuing carry on with K2 towering above us as we get closer and closer.

Just before base camp, amongst the boulder and ice strewn landscape is the Art Gilkey Memorial. A short scramble brings us to the place where those whose life K2 claimed are remembered. Plaques and engraved tin plates are attached to a small rocky outcrop at the foot of this great mountain. There are great views directly above us of K2 and we may see some climbing expeditions. After lunch, we retrace our steps back to Concordia.

From Arusha, set out in vehicles for the long drive to the starting point of the Lemosho Trail, the Londorossi Gate. Approaching the mountain from the west, the Lemosho Route starts in the Afromontane Rainforest, which is the first of four ecological zones you encounter on Kilimanjaro. Here you meet the rest of your crew and set off at a leisurely pace while keeping your eyes peeled for wildlife. Lunch is taken on the trail and camp is reached mid-afternoon. Overnight at Forest Camp.

From the forested slopes of Lemosho you ascend through a podocarpus and juniper forest and then break out on to a zone of heather and lichen-draped volcanic rock and the Shira Plateau, which used to be Kilimanjaro’s third peak before it collapsed. Lunch is taken on the trail and you arrive in camp mid-afternoon. The view of Kibo (the peak of Kilimanjaro) is breathtaking from this vantage point. Overnight at Moir Hut.

From Moir you traverse the slopes of Kibo. Here relatively little flora or fauna can survive the extreme temperature ranges and conditions that typify this zone. Lunch is normally taken close to a volcanic rock formation known as the Lava Tower. If you feel very strong there is an optional ascent of the 300-foot-tall Lava Tower before descending down to Barranco camp in the afternoon, passing through the strange yet beautiful ‘Garden of the Senecios’ (giant groundsel) which also features many giant lobelias. The Barranco Valley is one of the prettiest areas of the entire trail. Overnight at Barranco Camp.

You now have a relatively short day to reach Karanga Camp, after conquering the intimidating Barranco Wall. Be prepared to use all four limbs as you traverse the wall to the top of the Karanga Valley. From here, follow a path that sojourns through many inclines and declines to Karanga Camp, arriving in the late afternoon. Our selection of Karanga Camp is strategic – significant time at altitude is essential for safe acclimatization. Sunsets here are particularly spectacular with views of the southern glacial valleys and ice fields towering over 3000 feet above you. Overnight at Karanga Camp.

Today is another half day ascending to Barafu Camp. Once again lunch is taken in this high camp, allowing plenty of time to relax before the summit bid. Desolate alpine desert and, at times, strong winds rip over this camp, yet in the evenings splendid views of Mawenzi peak are the norm. A relatively early dinner is taken before resting for the evening. Overnight at Barafu Camp.

Depart just before midnight for the final summit bid. Patience and persistence is the name of game to reach the summit, and this is the coldest, windiest section of your adventure. Most likely by dawn, as the first rays of light start to appear across the Tanzanian landscape, you arrive near the rim at Stella Point, at an altitude of 18,652ft. Here, you are rewarded with the most glorious sunrise you are ever likely to see, appearing over Mawenzi Peak. Ascending via Stella Point affords a relatively short final section to Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa! Take as many pictures as you can! After a short celebration at the summit, begin the ebullient trek down. Go slowly and enjoy the wonderful rainforest scenery as you head towards Mweka Camp, arriving before dusk. With every step the air has more and more oxygen so although your legs will be jelly your heart will be light. Overnight Mweka Camp

Additional Info

The highlights of Kilimanjaro are its status as Africa’s tallest peak, its unique status as a free-standing volcanic mountain, and the diverse scenery trekked through during a climb, ranging from rainforests to arctic zones. Climbers also highlight specific landmarks like Stella Point, Uhuru Peak, and views from camps like Shira 2 and Karanga. Beyond the mountain itself, attractions in the region include Kikuletwa Hot Springs, Materuni Waterfalls, and the Olpopongi Maasai Cultural Village.

On the mountain

  • Africa’s tallest peak: Reaching the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, is a major highlight for climbers.
  • Unique geological features: As one of the world’s highest free-standing mountains, it offers unique perspectives and unimpeded views from its base.
  • Diverse ecosystems: The trek takes you through five distinct climate and ecological zones, from lush rainforests at the base to a barren arctic zone at the summit.
  • Scenic checkpoints: Notable points on the journey include Stella Point, a major checkpoint on the path to the summit, and the final summit, Uhuru Peak.
  • Spectacular views: Certain camps, such as Shira 2 and Karanga Camp, are known for offering spectacular sunrise and sunset views.
  • Wildlife and landscapes: The Rongai route, in particular, offers stunning views of the Kenyan landscape and fascinating wilderness areas near the border.

Highlights of the Everest Base Camp trek include the scenic flight to Lukla, the vibrant Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar, and the spiritual Tengboche Monastery. The trek also features incredible natural wonders like the Khumbu Glacier and Icefall, the Sagarmatha National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site), and breathtaking mountain views from Kala Patthar. A significant part of the experience is immersing yourself in the local Sherpa culture and hospitality.
Natural and scenic highlights

  • Flight to Lukla: A dramatic and scenic flight into one of the world’s highest airports, marking the start of the trek.
  • Sagarmatha National Park: A UNESCO World Heritage Site with diverse flora and fauna.
  • Khumbu Glacier and Icefall: The largest glacier in the world, with a dramatic and humbling icefall.
  • Kala Patthar: A viewpoint offering panoramic, up-close views of Mount Everest, especially stunning at sunrise or sunset.
  • Himalayan scenery: Continuous views of major peaks like Mount Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Ama Dablam, among others.
    Cultural and man-made highlights:-
  • Namche Bazaar: A vibrant Sherpa town and the gateway to the Everest region, serving as a key acclimatization stop.
  • Tengboche Monastery: The largest monastery in the Khumbu region, known for its spiritual serenity and stunning views.
  • Sherpa culture and hospitality: Experience the unique traditions, lifestyle, and warm welcomes in the local tea houses and villages.
  • Sherpa villages: Explore traditional settlements like those built with the help of Sir Edmund Hillary.
  • Thukla Pass: A memorial site dedicated to climbers who have lost their lives on Everest.

The highlights of the K2 Base Camp trek are the dramatic, rugged Karakoram mountain scenery, especially from Concordia, where you can see four 8,000-meter peaks. The trek is known for its remoteness, requiring camping on the glacier for an “otherworldly” experience, and traversing the Baltoro Glacier, which is home to the prominent Trango Towers.

Scenic and natural highlights

  • Concordia: Also called the “Throne Room of the Mountain Gods,” this is a spectacular junction where you can see four 8,000-meter peaks, including K2, Broad Peak, and Gasherbrum I and II.
  • Baltoro Glacier: The trek involves walking on this massive, living glacier, which is a unique natural wonder.
  • Trango Towers: You will see these impressive, sheer granite spires, which are among the most famous rock formations in the world.
  • Dramatic landscapes: The scenery is more rugged and vertical than at Everest, with black, jagged mountains rising steeply above the glaciers.

Unique trekking experience

  • Remoteness: The K2 trek is remote with no villages, shops, or tea houses after the initial roadhead. You will need to camp for about two weeks, often directly on the glacier.
  • Camping and facilities: Camping gear and meals are carried by porters. Facilities are basic, and you’ll need to go “wild” for restrooms.
  • Harsh conditions: Expect a range of temperatures, from hot days at the start to sub-zero nights. Weather can be unpredictable, with potential for snowstorms and icy winds.
  • Challenging terrain: The trail is long and demanding, with significant time spent hiking on the uneven, rocky, and sometimes wet surface of the glacier.
  • Adventure and exclusivity: The trek is considered more challenging and requires a greater degree of self-sufficiency and resilience than the Everest trek.

Most Common FAQs

It may amaze you but there is NO age limit for this trek. Saying that it doesn't mean you should not be in good physical and mental health. If you are a regular trekker it should not be difficult for you to complete this trek. It is better if you consult your doctor before going on this trek. Take necessary suggestions and medication.

Like any other trekking option, it also follows the same season that is of Spring and Autumn. Spring starts in March and ends in May. This season has a moderate climate and clear skies. There is less chance of rainfall and snowfall which makes things easier in this trek. The same goes with the Autumn season. The clear weather and moderate temperature make your journey enjoyable. If you don’t like the trek with the crowd then winter season is best for you. This off-season, the temperature goes really low and there is a chance of high snowfall.

First of all, there should not be confusion between Everest and Everest Base Camp. Climbing Everest 8848m and trekking to Everest Base Camp 5364m is a different thing. Trekking to Everest Base Camp is easier than climbing Everest. You may hear inspiring stories of 16 years to 80+ women trekking to Everest Base Camp. The trail leading to Everest Base Camp may be long and tiring but not dangerous. You should prepare yourself physically and mentally for this trek. It is better to take some precautions before climbing Everest Base Camp. Without it, this trek can be dangerous.

On average, it might take you an 11 to 14 days round trip trek to Everest Base Camp. The majority of the trekkers do it in 12 days. If you want to decrease the trekking days you can hire a helicopter. It might add extra expense to this journey, but also adds more excitement.

There is no fixed or exact answer to this question. Trekking to Everest Base Camp is famous for various things. From taking the flight towards Lukla to reaching Kala Pattar, everything is exciting. You will visit Namche Bazar, the largest Sherpa settlement in the Khumbu region. It is also a gateway to Mount Everest. You will also see one of the largest Monastery in the Khumbu region, in Tengboche. Mountains like Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, surround this beautiful monastery. You will enter this region through Sagarmatha National Park where you will see endangered floras and faunas. Kala Pattar is another notable landmark of this Everest region. From here you will see the world’s highest mountains and its surroundings.

There are various tea houses and lodges throughout this journey. They provide you delicious local food. Breakfast includes toasted bread, pancakes, eggs, hot milk, and many more. Typical Nepali lunch includes rice, pulses, vegetables, pickle, potato etc. Other than this you can also have porridge, toast, peanut butter, and a few more.

The best time to hike to K2 Base Camp is between July and August. Although, the trekking season runs from mid-June to mid-September, so it is possible to trek anytime during those months. It is not recommended to trek in early-June because the snow has not yet melted away. Thus, passes above 3,000 meters are closed until enough snow has melted away to enable hiking. Gondogoro La and many of the other passes will also close by the end of September due to the return of heavy snowfall as the seasons change.

The weather you’ll experience on the trek depends on what time of year you choose to hike. July and August are the most popular trekking months. This is when the skies are more likely to be clear and the weather more stable. While the weather during the trekking season is generally quite good, hikers should always be prepared for anything as mountain conditions can be very unpredictable - especially in the higher reaches. You can expect strong winds, rain and snow as you hike. But hopefully you’ll experience mostly clear skies. Temperatures on the mountain range from below freezing at night to quite warm during the day. So it is advisable that you pack multiple layers of clothing that you can easily put on and remove as the temperatures change. The higher you trek, the colder it gets. Temperatures also get significantly colder as you reach the glacier so make sure you pack the right clothes to keep you warm.

The K2 Base Camp trek is long and strenuous. You should have a good level of fitness and be in good health if you are planning to take on the challenge. There isn’t a proper trail on the Baltoro Glacier, which you’ll be trekking on for a couple of days, so it is quite slow going and difficult at times due to loose scree. If your trip includes crossing the Gondogoro La, you will need to know how to use crampons and an ice axe. It is recommended that you have done some winter hiking in snow and at high altitude before taking on this trek.

As with any high-altitude trek, there are some risks when hiking to the K2 Base Camp. The camp lies at about 5,400 meters so make sure you take enough time to acclimatize during your ascent to ensure you don’t suffer the effects of altitude sickness. When walking on the glacier and the icy terrain, take your time so that you don’t slip and sprain your ankle. There is also the danger of rockfalls when crossing Gondogoro La so wearing a helmet is highly recommended.

There are a few different routes that tour operators offer for the K2 Base Camp Trek, although most follow the easiet route that starts and finishes at Askole (avoiding Gondogoro La). This route is the most popular because it doesn’t require technical skills and offers some variability as you can decide to take a detour to the Trango Towers Base Camp or stay overnight at the Broad Peak Base Camp. If you do want to tackle Gondogoro La, it is still recommended to start at Askole as it allows for better acclimatization. This route requires some technical skill when you cross the high mountain pass. The trail then descends the other side and follow the valley until you reach the village of Hushe.

We have made this decision easy for you, its The Lemosho Route! which is the only route we use for our Kilimanjaro trek. When you take on any adventure, it's not all about where you are going but how you get there. The Lemosho Route takes eight days which helps ensure proper acclimatisation - the single most important part of a successful summit. During these eight days you’ll traverse the mountain, trek through many stunning landscapes and spend the nights camping which all add to the thrill of adventure. After a successful summit you’ll descend quickly via the Mweka route for a well earned beer, or two, or three.

We do have a store room at our hotel in Moshi which has a limited supply of equipment, however we do recommend using your own equipment as much as possible. This is because you will be familiar with your kit before climbing the mountain which is beneficial. Items like boots, trousers and base layers are always best when you are the only person to have worn them. However you can opt to hire things like sleeping bags, down jackets, duffel bags and poles etc.

We run our treks during the dry seasons which happen twice a year from January to March and then June to October. Trekking during the rainy season is not much fun and heavy rain clouds means the epic views will be few and far between. January to March can be colder at the higher altitudes and there is a good chance of snow. The peak season is during June to October as this coincides with summer holidays in many countries, so you will see more people on the mountain.

You will only have to carry your day pack which we recommend be around 25 to 35 litres for your camp-to-camp essentials like snacks, water, rain clothes and your camera. We have a fantastic team of porters who will be carrying your duffel bags with all your heavy gear and everything else you need to thrive on the mountain, items such as; tents, toilets, kitchen equipment, food and medical supplies.

Yes, we are proud to say that our guides are the best in the business. All of our guides are fully qualified mountain guides who have worked their way up to their senior positions gaining all the necessary qualifications and experience. Many of our guides have summited Kilimanjaro over 400 times and guided many happy clients to the roof of Africa. Our guides are also fully-trained high altitude medics, so they know how to look after you on the hill!
