Essential Travel Information: Visas, Permits, and Logistics
Navigating the complexities of a Tibet tour requires expert guidance. We believe in being transparent and well-prepared. Here is a detailed breakdown of the latest rules for each entry point to ensure your journey is seamless and worry-free.

For Travelers Entering Tibet from Mainland China (Options 1, 2, & 3)
This route is ideal for solo travelers or small groups, as there is no minimum group size requirement.
- Chinese Visa: You must have a valid Chinese visa in your passport. We strongly recommend you apply for this in your home country. A crucial tip: When filling out the application, it is best to list other cities in mainland China (e.g., Beijing, Shanghai) as your destination. Mentioning Tibet can sometimes complicate or lead to a refusal of your application.
- Tibet Travel Permit (TTP): This permit is mandatory. You cannot enter Tibet without it. You cannot apply for the TTP on your own; Good Karma Trekking will apply for it on your behalf after you book your tour.
- Mandatory Guided Tours: All foreign visitors are required to be on a pre-booked tour with an officially licensed guide, driver, and vehicle for the entire duration of their trip. Independent travel is strictly prohibited.
- Additional Permits: Depending on your itinerary, you may need an Aliens’ Travel Permit for regions like Everest Base Camp or a Military Permit for remote areas like Mount Kailash. We will handle all necessary applications for you.
- Advance Booking: It is essential to book your tour at least 20-30 days in advance to allow ample time for all permits to be processed and issued.
For Travelers Entering Tibet from Kathmandu, Nepal (Option 4)
This route is a great choice for groups of four or more who prefer a private tour.
- China Group Visa: For foreign travelers entering Tibet from Nepal, a minimum of four people is required for a single “group visa” document.
- Group Application: The Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu does not issue individual visas for Tibet; instead, it issues one group document for all members.
- Solo Travelers: If you are a solo traveler, we will assist you by grouping you with other travelers who have a similar itinerary to meet the minimum requirement.
- Processing Timeline: The total time required is more than just the embassy’s processing. A “Visa Invitation” letter from the Tibet Tourism Bureau is required first, which can take 8-15 business days. The embassy then takes 3-4 working days to issue the visa. We recommend arriving in Kathmandu at least 5 days before your planned departure to ensure a smooth process.
